From Bam Bam to Bam Bam
A few weeks ago, I was introduced to this collective (?) from Chennai, India, called Focus Group Music, and it’s founder (?) Vidyuth Subramaniam. They do a weekly listening group every Friday, in which someone puts on a nearly-four-hour set of music they like, and they chat about it on their Discord channel. When Vidyuth asked me if I’d like to do one on the 26th of March, I said yes, of course I’d like to do one. In the weekend following our chat, I compiled a set, From Bam Bam to Bam Bam, a playlist made in accordance with a simple rule. Starting from Sister Nancy’s Bam Bam, the playlist obeys the following rule until it circles back to Toots and the Maytals’ Bam Bam, the song that directly inspired Sister Nancy’s track and consequently, the genre of dancehall. Each track from Bam Bam to Bam Bam is directly related to the previous one, either because their artists have collaborated, or they share producers, or an artist has released a prominent cover of the other artist.
I really enjoyed putting this set together, and have since considered making more sets and putting them out on Mixcloud. Instead of getting down to doing that, I've spent hours listening to Honey Dijon's Boiler Room set. Honestly, no regrets. Anyway, the set goes live at 8 pm IST. Here’s the link to it. And you can find me chatting about it on the Discord channel I’ve linked above. Plus, normal service on Stranger Fiction resumes on the 27th of March. We have much to chat about.
