The Orb — Adventures Beyond The Underworld
A classic of ambient house and electronica, it feels like floating through space with headphones on — tuned to the frequency of some alien radio station playing music from their home planet that mimics music inspired by human electronic music.
It’s a two-hour-long concept album, so, in my view, best experienced at night, with the headphones on, bathed in the blue light from an idle television screen. Honestly it also works just as well in the middle of an afternoon after a Zoom call in a makeshift cubicle.
Check it out on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube.
Teeth of the Sea’s 2023 record, Hive, is one of my favourite records of the year. It’s a tightly produced alt-psych rock record. It’s low on lyrics, high on sonic exploration. And it manages to occupy this fairly unique space without sounding like a prog record (thank goodness).
