Washed Out — Within and Without

I was a washed-up hostel-dweller during chillwave’s brief and wondrous life. I can’t imagine a better mental space to enjoy what I then (and now) considered the archetypical album of the (for some reason) much-maligned genre. I’d like to listen to this while sheltered under a blue umbrella on a white-sand beach that is neither too hot nor too cold, just temperate.

Chillwave is a super accessible subgenre of electronic music, and I’ve often wondered why it didn’t break into the mainstream, this album in particular.

Teeth of the Sea’s 2023 record, Hive, is one of my favourite records of the year. It’s a tightly produced alt-psych rock record. It’s low on lyrics, high on sonic exploration. And it manages to occupy this fairly unique space without sounding like a prog record (thank goodness).

Nourished by Time’s Erotic Probiotic 2 is – far and away – my favourite record made in 2023. I love its simplicity, a feature it shares with Sleaford Mods’ UK GRIM, another favourite from 2023. However, it shares its vocabulary with synth-based R&B unlike UK GRIM’s post-punk.
